Our History

The Inspiring Journey of Chens Enterprises.
Discovery how a basement startup became a
market leader.
The Early Days
Chens Enterprises’ journey began with Jie Chen, who emigrated from Fujian Province, China, to Canada in 1995 with only a hundred dollars. In China, Jie was a doctor, following in his father’s footsteps. However, his medical qualifications weren’t recognized in Canada, so he had to find a new path. He chose to study computer engineering at the University of Toronto despite having no prior experience with computers. Jie balanced his studies with working various jobs, including in supermarkets, to support himself.
The First Steps in Business
Jie’s business journey began when he took over a struggling Fujianese supermarket in Toronto, addressing poor product sourcing and management. By sourcing directly from Canadian suppliers, he cut costs and boosted profitability, setting the stage for future success.
In 2006, Jie bought a struggling IGA in Brampton, rebranding it as Fair & Fresh with an ‘East meets West’ concept. By blending Western and Asian products, hiring a diverse staff, and offering services like free senior home delivery, he tripled sales within a year, leading to its successful sale.
Founding Chens Enterprises
With the success of Fair & Fresh, Jie and his brothers, Jin and Yuan, decided to enter the wholesale and distribution market. They founded Chens Enterprises in 2008, starting operations in Jie’s basement. Despite limited resources, their deep knowledge of both Chinese and Western supermarket industries enabled rapid growth. Their first major breakthrough came when Jie secured an account with Procter & Gamble at a trade show, followed by partnerships with other significant brands like Maple Leaf Foods.
Growth and Expansion
Chens Enterprises quickly outgrew its initial setup, moving from Jie’s basement to a third-party site and then to its own warehouse. Today, the company operates from a 100,000-square-foot warehouse in Mississauga and continues to grow. Investments in advanced computer software and an ERP system have positioned Chens Enterprises at the forefront of ethnic product distribution in Canada.
Commitment to Integrity and Community
Under Jie’s leadership, Chens Enterprises is known for its integrity and commitment to creating beneficial outcomes for vendors, customers, and employees alike. The company has received numerous awards, including the Best Supplier Award from T&T Supermarkets and the Chinese Canadian Entrepreneur of the Year award. Jie is also dedicated to mentoring young entrepreneurs and business students and promoting socially responsible business practices.
Looking to the Future
Chens Enterprises plans to expand across Canada with new distribution centers in Vancouver, Calgary, and Quebec. Its e-commerce platform, Brandco Direct, is growing quickly, offering online ordering and home delivery.
Chens Enterprises’ story is one of resilience, innovation, and family unity. From humble beginnings to a leader in ethnic product distribution, the company shows what can be achieved through dedication and vision.
